The ABC mockumentary sitcom Modern Family has easily become one of the nation’s most beloved comedy series since its first season began back in 2009. Nine years and nine seasons have passed, and Modern Family has yet to stop making us laugh out loud.
Most of us are probably well-aware of the fact that despite the insanely spot-on chemistry between the talented cast members, the actors and actresses of Modern Family have their own families, lives, and romances off the set.
While it may be hard to imagine Phil without Claire, Cam without Mitch, or Jay without Gloria – the actors and actresses who portray these characters have some pretty interesting and special relationships off the screen as well. Even the children of the series, who have grown up into young adults before our very eyes, have romantic relationships of their own.
Ed O’Neill and Catherine Rusoff – married
Although Modern Family fans may be used to seeing the Pritchett family patriarch Jay next to his feisty Colombian wife Gloria, in real life, Ed O’Neill has had a different sweetheart for over 30 years! The actor got married to his wife Catherine Rusoff in 1986.
Catherine had a brief acting career herself in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and even appeared in a couple episodes with her then newlywed husband in Married with Children. Since then, it seems like she has retired from the industry. The couple has two daughters, Sophia, 19, and Claire, 22. Sophia is also an actress, who starred in a 2017 thriller called An American Funeral.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello – married
Sofia Vergara, who plays Jay’s gorgeous and fun-loving wife Gloria, tied the knot to fellow actor and former True Blood star Joe Manganiello in 2015. The stunning pair got hitched in a lavish Palm Beach wedding after getting engaged on Christmas day in 2014 after six months of dating.
Of course, many of her Modern Family co-stars attended in order to help celebrate their friend’s big day. Following the wedding, Sofia gushed about her husband to Ellen DeGeneres while appearing as a guest on her show saying, “I must have done something really, really right in my life to get that reward.” The two are now considered one of Hollywood’s It couples.
Julie Bowen and Scott Phillips – separated
There is no denying that Julie Bowen, who portrays Claire Dunphy, has some serious and hilarious on-screen chemistry with her TV husband Phil (Ty Burrell). However, off-screen, she has been married to real estate investor and software developer Scott Phillips since 2004.
The couple are now parents to three sons, Oliver, 11, and eight-year-old twin boys John and Gustav. Unfortunately, after 13 years of marriage the pair called it quits in February 2017, and are currently finalizing their divorce.
Ty Burrell and Holly Burrell – married
Phil Dunphy, Claire’s loving husband and “cool dad” to their children Haley, Alex, and Luke is played by the talented Ty Burrell. In real life, Ty has been happily married to his wife Holly, who just so happens to work as a professional chef.
However, before she was a chef, she was an aspiring actress, and met the future Modern Family star at a Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C. when they were both first just starting out their acting careers.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita – married
Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays the adorable, slightly high-strung Mitchell Pritchett. On-screen, he may be known for his marriage with his outgoing, big-hearted husband Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), but off-screen he has a different man in his life.

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams – dating
Sarah Hyland portrays Claire and Phil’s oldest child, the pretty, and at times extremely self-absorbed, daughter Haley. Although Haley has made some pretty poor decisions when it comes to her dating life on-screen, in real-life the actress is currently in a very happy relationship with radio DJ and former The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise contestant Wells Adams.
Apparently, they have Twitter to thank for their romance, which blossomed after Wells sent Sarah a direct message on her page.
Joe Mande and Kylie Augustine – married
Ben, Claire’s slightly awkward assistant and Alex’s former boyfriend, is portrayed by Joe Mande. Joe, who is also a stand up comedian and a talented writer who has worked on shows such as Parks and Recreation and The Good Place, got married to his longtime girlfriend Kylie Augustine in 2015.
