Many people look back on the era of Rock and Roll with nostalgia and great memories. In those days, people were carefree and lived and breathed music. Many have memories of hanging out with their friends in the back of a truck and singing along to the songs on the radio. The Rock and Roll genre changed the face of music and created sounds that no one had every heard before.

Everyone had a favorite rock band and waited with anticipation until the band showed up for a concert in their hometown. Concert goers felt the music in their bodies and many even waited outside venues to try and get a glimpse of the rockstars they idolized.

However, some fans took their dedication to their favorite bands to the next level. Many people wanted to become a part of the lives of rock stars and did whatever they could to make their way into the glamorous and often troublesome lives of rock stars. This often meant giving up their own lives to tour around the world with the bands they loved. Moreover, many got involved in illicit activities that were notorious for being a part of the Rock and Roll lifestyle. In addition to listen to thee band’s music, these people hopped on tour buses and crashed hotel rooms to get closer to the entertainers.

These people were more commonly known as ‘groupies’ and were famous for tagging along with the most famous bands of the Rock and Roll era. They experienced what the rich and famous experienced including all the good and all of the bad. Many of them dated band members and ultimately got their hearts broken. Who were these groupies and how did they get involved with some of the most famous bands in history?

Bebe Buell

This famous groupie was much more than a girl who followed a band around. Buell had quite a successful modeling career and she was even featured in Playboy Magazine as playmate of the month back in 1974. Buell moved from her hometown in Virginia to start her career in New York. Bebe Buell had a lengthy relationship with Todd Rundgren until the two ultimately split in 1979. But Buell did not give up on dating musicians and she dated Steven Tyler of the band Aerosmith and the two share a daughter, Liv Tyler.

Anita Pallenberg

Anita Pallenberg was known for hanging around multiple rockstars and charming them with her stunning good looks. Pallenberg is best known for dating two of the band members of The Rolling Stones. Anita dated both Keith Richards and Brian Jones and had three kids with the former. Keith and Anita’s relationship did not stand the test of time but their split was amicable. Unfortunately, Pallenberg recently passed away at 73.

Tawny Kitaen

Julia, also known as Tawny Kitaen, was making her way into the spotlight before she became a groupie. Kitaen was in the movie Bachelor Party and she also made appearances in a number of videos. Her most notable appearance was in Whitesnake’s video for the song “Still of the Night.” Tawny had the look that any band would want in their video. Tawny’s involvement in the Whitesnake video did a lot of good for her career and her personal life as she went on to marry David Coverdale who was the band’s lead singer. However, the marriage did not last too long.

Pamela Des Barres

When Pamela was a teenager she idolized big stars like Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Elvis. It seems fitting that she grew up to become a groupie to some of the biggest rock stars of her generation. Through connections she made from friends, Des Barres began getting closer to well-known musicians and she even found herself babysitting Frank Zappa’s kids. Des Barres made herself a big name in the Rock and Roll scene and ended up linked to musicians such as Keith moon, Jim Morrison and Jimmy Page. Additionally, Des Barres inspired a character played by Kate Hudson in the movie Almost Famous.

Sable Starr

In her day, Sable Star was known as the, “Queen of the Groupies.” She found her way into the dressing rooms of rockstars long before she turned 18. Starr began her journey as a groupie when she was just 14. The blonde beauty caught many musician’s eyes including stars like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Iggy Pop, and Alice Cooper. Unfortunately, Starr died in 2009 after a battle with brain cancer.

Carmen Electra

Carmen Electra has been linked to many notable men in Hollywood. The star, whose real name is Tara Leigh Patrick, was best known for her brief marriage to the eccentric athlete Dennis Rodman. Since their marriage ended, Electra has been spotted with tons of different rock stars. She married guitar player Dave Navarro but after that union ended she dated Tommy Lee. Electra will also forever be indebted to Prince who helped her with her first record.

Lori Maddox

Maddox was another groupie to get involved in the Rock and Roll scene at a young age. Lori was just 14 when she started hanging out with musicians and it has been rumored that her first lover was David Bowie. She is also known for having an odd relationship with Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin. Page was extremely possessive of Lori throughout their relationship and she inspired the song “Sick Again.” After her tumultuous time with Page ended, Maddox was linked to Mick Jagger.

Nancy Spungen

Nancy Spungen is most famous for being in a relationship with Sid Vicious. When Spungen was only 15, she left her hometown of Philadelphia to go to London while she was dealing with a crippling mental illness. Spungen had to work as a lady of the night in order to survive. Nancy made herself well-known amongst the world of Rock and Roll but was eventually ostracized and she made her way back to America. She found herself in New York City an infamously spent most of her time in the Chelsea Hotel. She died at just 20 years-old after she was stabbed to death.

Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull was not the type of woman one expected to be a groupie. She was raised in a wealthy family that had an appreciation for literature and art. So, many were surprised when she got involved with the Rolling Stones when their manager Andrew Loog took an interest in Faithfull’s talent for singing. Faithfull was frequently spotted with the band’s frontman Mick Jagger but she was also linked to two other band members. Obviously, as with most of Jagger’s girlfriend’s, the relationship ended but Faithfull is still singing until this day.

Erin Everly

While we have been focusing a lot on the groupies of The Rolling Stones and Motley Crue, we are now moving on to another famous band. Erin Everly was married to the lead singer of Guns N’ Roses, Axl Rose, for quite a while. Everly is thought to be the inspiration behind the smash hit “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and she was even feature in the music video for the song. Unfortunately, their marriage did not last because of the unstable Rock and Roll lifestyle.

Pattie Boyd

Before Pattie Boyd became a notable groupie, she modeled all over the world from New York to Paris and in her hometown of London. Boyd also worked behind the camera and photographed the likes of George Harrison and Eric Clapton. It is no surprise that many rock stars were chasing after Boyd until she married George Harrison. The two were married for eleven years and after their divorce, Boyd and Eric Clapton began a relationship. They also married and divorced in the late 1980s.

Bianca Jagger

Bianca Jagger was married to Mick Jagger from 1971 until 1979 after she made her way into some elite parties in Studio 54. The couple had a daughter together before they parted ways. After their split, Bianca was known for hanging around in the club scene during the 1980s. Today, she is doing something quite different than partying as she works for human rights and is involved with the Council of Europe.

Courtney Love

When you hear the name Courtney Love, the first thing that probably pops into your mind is Nirvana. Love was famously married to Kurt Cobain who was the frontman for Nirvana. The two had a daughter together before Cobain infamously took his own life. Before Cobain, however, Love was linked to many other musicians including REM’s Michael Stipe and The Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan. Love is still singing to this day and is often in the spotlight for odd behavior.

Chris O’Dell

While many of the women on this list sought out musicians intentionally, Chris O’Dell stumbled into the world of Rock and Roll by accident. O’Dell was an assistant at Apple Records, which was famously founded by the Beatles. Chris began hanging around with the band and she inspired George Harrison to pen the song “O’Dell.” O’Dell eventually moved on from spending time with the Beatles and started working for The Rolling Stones. She has had connections to the Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr as well as Eric Clapton.

Tura Satana

Satana was an actress and dancer who appeared in many films in her time. Tura is originally from Japan but she spent most of her life in America. Tura is linked to the king of Rock and Roll, also known as Elvis Presley. Presley allegedly became interested in Satana after he saw her dance in Chicago. The two reportedly began a romantic relationship although it did not last. Many have argued that Satana was one of the first women to be a groupie.

Cleo Odzer

Cleo Odzer got involved in the music world after she began writing about bands for her local newspaper. This led her to hang around some famous names such as Keith Emerson. The two fell in love and eventually got engaged. However, their relationship did not last and Odzer found herself in India where she frequently participated in taking illegal substances. She remained there until her death in 2001 at the young age of 50.

Donna D’Errico

D’Errico is another groupie to make our list who appeared on Baywatch and dated a Motley Crue band member. D’Errico found herself in the spotlight after she was named playmate of the month by Playboy. D’Errico married Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx and the two had a fairly long marriage for Hollywood standards. Before their ten year marriage ended in 2007, they had a child. D’Errico is still acting until this day.

Brandi Brandt

It seems that Nikki Sixx had a thing for groupies as he was also linked to Brandi Brandt. The Rock and Roll lifestyle was in Brandt’s genes as her mother was a drummer in the band, American Girls. Brandt started a career as a model and also worked as an actress. Brandt was featured in a music video for Aerosmith and was also a playmate of the month. Brandt and Sixx were married for 7 years and they had 3 children together before they ultimately ended their marriage in 1996.

Bobbi Brown

With stunning looks and long blonde hair, it is not surprising that Bobbi Brown found her way into the world of Rock and Roll. Brown was noticed for her beauty long before her groupie career. She was named Miss Teen Louisiana in 1987 and she also appeared on television a couple of times. Brown is probably best known for appearing on the cover of Warrant’s Cherry Pie album as well as being featured in the music video for the song.

Connie Hamzy

Connie Hamzy is better known by her nickname, Sweet Connie. She earned the name after she gained a reputation for being a southern belle from Arkansas with a warm smile. Connie was so well-known in the music world that she made it into the lyrics of a Grand Funk Railroad song. Hamzy was most notably linked to Alice Cooper, John Bonham and Keith Moon. Hamzy eventually penned an autobiography based on her experiences as a groupie.

Kendra Jade

Kendra Jade made a name for herself in the world of burlesque dancing and in the adult entertainment industry. Jade moved to California as a young woman to start her career and she caught the eyes of many musicians shortly after. She was soon attending star studded parties and enjoying her time in the spotlight. After she had enough of her partying lifestyle, Jade tied the knot with Canadian musician Lukas Rossi. Finally some good news for Hollywood relationships as these two are still together.

Josie Stevens

While Josie Stevens was never actually romantically linked to musicians like Axl Rose and Mick jagger, she was known for following them around as a true groupie does. Stevens made a name for herself when she began modeling and even made it into Playboy Magazine. Stevens opted for a career change and became a makeup artist. Ultimately, Stevens did get into a relationship with a rocker when she married guitarist Steve Stevens. Stevens is still in the spotlight today as she started her own brand of clothing in 2011.

Heather Locklear

Heather Locklear is an accomplished actress and is known for starring in Melrose Place, which earned her 4 nominations for a Golden Globe. She has also acted on shows such as Spin City and Dynasty. Besides her successful acting career, Locklear is known for her affinity toward rock musicians. She was married to Tommy Lee from 1986 until 1993 and was also she was also married to Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi until they divorced in 2007.

Audrey Hamilton

Unlike most of the groupies to make our list, Audrey Hamilton has kept a low profile and tries to stay out of the spotlight. Hamilton spent much of her time with Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin but the relationship ended in the late 70s after Plant’s son passed away. After that split, Hamilton went on to date Ace Frehley who is a guitarist for Kiss and the two even have a child together.

Kathleen Dorritie

Kathleen Dorritie found her way into the chaotic world of Rock and Roll after she became David Bowie’s publicist. Dorritie went on to have a career in entertainment and acted in Pork, which was a play by Andy Warhol. Dorritie did not just follow around celebrities, she also became their friends. She was a good friend to Warhol and even assisted him in art projects. She was also rumored to have been close with the Beatles singer John Lennon.

Cathy Smith

Cathy Smith gained notoriety as a groupie in the 1960s. She spent most of her time with The Band and their song “The Weight” even mentions smith. Smith was also linked to Gordon Lightfoot who is a Canadian folk musician. He penned a song about his experiences with Cathy put did not paint her in a positive way in his song “Sundown.” Smith’s relationship with Lightfoot allegedly ended due to lies and addiction. Smith landed herself in prison after she allegedly injected actor John Belushi with heroin.

Cynthia Albritton

Albritton earned herself the nickname, Cynthia Plaster Caster. Cynthia was a true groupie and began latching onto one rockstar after another in hopes that they would fall in love with her. The reason she received her odd nickname was due to her creating plaster casts of many musician’s private areas. Oddly enough, it was Frank Zappa who helped Cynthia pursue her interesting hobby. Albritton’s first plaster cast subject was Jimi Hendrix.

Roxana Shirazi

Roxana is originally from Iran but she and her family fled the country to England when she was a little girl. Shirazi ended up becoming a belly dancer in some of London’s nightclubs and she enjoyed her time in the spotlight. Her dancing career reportedly led her to become romantically involved with some notable musicians from bands such as Guns N’ Roses and Black Cherry. Shirazi wrote a memoir about her experiences with with stars.

Pleather

In contrast to every other groupie on our list, this one happens to be male. While male groupies do not get quite as much attention as their female counterparts, they do exist. Pleather was a mysterious groupie that found himself hanging around some notable stars. He was particularly interested in Courtney Love and the female band The Bangles. While no one was quite sure what his goal was, Pleather was well known as a groupie for over ten years.

Pamela Anderson

The star of Baywatch had a very notable love of rockstars. Anderson was first married to Tommy Lee from Motley Crue in the late 1990s and they had two children. The couple eventually divorced and Anderson moved on to other Rock and Roll stars. She married Kid Rock in the mid 2000s but the marriage ended only a year later. She was also linked to the singer Bret Michaels. Since her partying days, Anderson has calmed down and is now an animal rights activist.
