When it comes to finding your perfect vacation destination, most of us like to avoid the tourist traps – because nobody likes to bump into thousands of sweaty bodies all day every day and miss the beautiful sights because of the constant wall of selfie sticks. Thankfully, there are some hidden gems on one of the most incredible continents in the world; Europe. Europe is full of wild and wonderful spots that have been left untouched by travel agents and tour guides. Check out the most beautiful places you didn’t know existed in Europe.
If you’re going to take a trip to Burano, you’ll need to remember your sunglasses – and not because of the sun. Located just a short boat trip away from the bustling streets and canals of Venice is the island of Burano. This little island is truly a sight to behold. With houses of every color adorning the bright green canalways, you won’t know where to look first. Luckily, you’ll get a good view of the Instagram-worthy location, as very few people take the trip to this color-crazed residence. Follow the canals to reach the enormous bell tower, and look over towards those who are slightly less comfortable in Venice. Bonus.
Isle of Skye, Scotland
Choosing a destination in Europe is super easy; but for some reason, most people forget about Scotland. The Isle of Skye lies just off the coast of the north west of Scotland and is like a fairytale. There is no other way to describe this destination. It really is otherworldly. With mystical lakes surrounded by mountains, with some of the best sunsets in the United Kingdom, and some of the most beautiful little coastal towns, the Isle of Skye needs to be seen to be believed. No trip to the Isle of Skye would be complete without a trip to the Old Man of Storr, a rocky hill that looks like it has been taken from the pages of Lord of the Rings.
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway; look no further. Over the course of thousands of years, Sintra in Portugal has been the inspiration for hundreds of novelists, poets, and artists who have all been charmed by the intense romanticism of this city. This lovable little city is nestled in between the statuesque Sintra Mountains on one side, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, and boasts some of the most impressive architecture in Europe. You can explore the numerous hilltop Romanticist palaces and castles, the beautiful gardens, the colorful buildings, and views across the impressive ocean and surrounding forests. This place will truly take your breath away.
Unfortunately for lovers of beautiful places, tourists are slowly but surely realizing the true potential of Croatia and taking over. Thankfully, they haven’t managed to steal all of the hidden gems just yet. Hvar is still relatively unknown to the tourist trade and is ready and available for true adventurers to explore. This Mediterranean island is full of terracotta roofs, hilltop fortresses, beautiful churches, and beautiful scenery. Surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, this destination offers some of the most astounding beaches in Europe on the coast. Yet, as you go inland, you’re greeted by magnificent fields of lavender that stretch as far as the eye can see.
Thankfully, the whole of Slovenia is normally kept off the tourist destination list – which is great for us folks who love to explore untouched gems. Although you have the whole country to choose from, Bohinj is one of our favorite destinations in Slovenia. Bohinj is less of a destination and more of a landscape. Located in the valley of the Julian Alps, Bohinj is a conglomeration of humongous lakes, mountains, valleys, and National Parks that are just screaming to be explored. Because of this, there is so much to see and do. You can kayak on Lake Bohinj, you can take the cable car up the to the top of the Bohinj Basin, or you can just take a wander through the majestic Triglav National Park.
