The sunny coastal city of LA has always been one of the most popular tourist hotspots in the US, but being such a large city with vast areas of residential streets can make it rather problematic for tourists too. There’s so much to do and see, but if you don’t plan and organize your trip properly, you can encounter a number of problems that can detriment your enjoyment of the trip.
Here are a number of common mistakes that tourists tend to do when visiting Los Angeles for the first time..
Remember there are various airports when booking your flight
Anyone who is a regular flyer to and from Los Angeles knows it’s an extremely busy airport. In fact, a lot of locals tend to avoid it. There are always masses of crowds, especially during peak tourist season, so when you’re booking your flight, remember there are other airports that are just as accessible. Smaller airports such as Burbank and Long Beach also tend to offer cheaper prices too, so always see if there are other options for your flight times.
Never underestimate the traffic levels
One thing LA is not well known for is its abundance of quick and easy public transport. In fact, it will be virtually impossible for you to easily see the whole of LA without a rented car. If your planning a long sight-seeing trip, then we definitely recommend hiring a car for you get around. But bear in mind LA traffic is notoriously bad, so always avoid the rush hours at commuting peak times. If you don’t or can’t hire a private car, then there are always great taxi options that can actually turn out a lot cheaper!
Remember the rules of the road
The transport roads in LA are heavily policed, so make sure you abide by the law at all costs. This means absolutely no using cell phones when driving and always double check your mirrors for motorcycles when you change lanes. This is especially important when driving through traffic because motorcycles drive in and out of lanes. Another tip – don’t jaywalk! It’s very illegal in LA, and you will be fined.
Explore more than just the well-known hotspots
LA covers one of the biggest areas of a metropolitan city in the world, so explore your options and make sure you plan your day to day carefully. The outskirts of LA tend to be far less busy with tourists so why not make your way out of town to visit some of LA’s hidden gems – like the impressive Watts Tower or the fascinating derelict zoo in Griffith Park. There’s also plenty of gorgeous beaches for you to relax on, so consider avoiding the crowds at famous beaches like Venice and Santa Monic, and instead head north or south.
Don’t expect the red carpet to be rolled out
When most people plan a trip to LA, they immediately think of Hollywood. Whatever you do, don’t expect any glitz and glamor on the Walk of Fame. If you’re looking for the beauty and iconic sights of LA you see in the films, head to Beverly Hills or Rodeo Drive where you’ll find the sights, sounds and smells you’re wanting. LA is known to disappoint eager dreaming tourists a lot, so don’t expect to see a red carpet rolled out and your favorite celebrities walking down the street.
Whether you’re visiting for a day, a week or a month, make sure you visit LA in the correct way. There’s a lot of delight to explore on the LA streets, so make sure you don’t make any common mistakes for you to get the most out of your trip. Enjoy!
