A moment of zen: relaxing things you can do on a vacation alone

A French philosopher once said that ‘Hell is other people’ and well… we have to agree with him. Sometimes, you just want to go on a relaxing vacation without screaming kids, an overeager boyfriend or girlfriend, without a schedule, away from work to just relax. But when you get there, you find yourself feeling a bit lost. You’re so used to being with other people that having time to yourself is an alien concept. What do you do? Where do you go? Here are five relaxing activities that you can do when you’re alone on vacation.

Yep, reading soothes the mind. Whether it’s a book, a Kindle, a magazine, or a comic, reading is one of the best forms of relaxation – and even better done alone. Just think, no one to interrupt you on page 72! Reading while on vacation alone allows you the opportunity to shut off from the world around you and the world you’ve left behind. We’d recommend getting yourself stuck into a good novel, where you can imagine yourself in a fantastical world. Because who doesn’t want to be a spy for the day?

There is nothing more relaxing than meditating. Many people are put off by meditation because they think they have to be mental gurus, or they think it takes up too much time of the day (or whenever they’ve tried to do it before they’ve laughed the whole way through). Nevertheless, meditation doesn’t have to be complicated, and anyone can do it. Set aside ten minutes of your day to take yourself down to the sea, seat yourself in the sand, focus on your breathing and the relaxing sound of the waves.

Have a massage

Wherever you go on vacation, we can guarantee that you won’t have to travel far to find a nearby masseuse. If you want to really relax, why not pay someone a few dollars to do it for you? Massaging away all of the tension and knots in your body will cleanse your body and your mind, and you’ll leave feeling completely refreshed.

People watch

Whether we’re nosy or if we just love embracing other people’s lives, we can’t get enough of people watching – and it is incredibly relaxing. Find a nice cafe or coffee shop, enjoy the sun out on the terrace and watch the world go by. Watching others moving around while you’re stationary gives you the feeling of tranquility and relaxation. But don’t drift off too much, beware of thieves in public places – keep your phone in your bag.

Take a long walk

If you’re on vacation alone, going for a long walk can really clear your head and shut yourself off from the world around you. Choose a path away from the main tourist attractions – as trying to push yourself through vest tops, short shorts and sweaty bodies won’t relax you. Find a small mountain peak, or a cobbled pathway, a park or a forest near to you, and just walk. The slow pace will fill your body with peace, and the fresh air will recharge your batteries.
