If you fancy a memorable and culturally significant vacation, we suggest packing your bags and heading for Guatemala City. There is so much on offer there, you just have to know where to look for it. The revamped and rejuvenated capital of Guatemala is currently one of the hippest and most happening hotspots in Central America. Specifically, the bohemian and trendy neighborhood of Cuatro Grados Norte.
This 19th Century neighborhood is most definitely one that is pulsing and teeming with excitement and adventure. And what a turnaround it has been for the city. By the late 1990s, crime and poverty were rife, and it was not a nice place to be. However, since that time, the city (and the country as well) has undergone a lot of changes. Guatemala City is now a safe, clean, and appealing place for tourists to visit. Don’t believe us? Just check out these five tasty places offering excellent food and drinks in the city.
El Príncipe Gris
As we know, there is a big craft beer movement in society these days, and that has resulted in a lot of pop ups appearing all over the place. This is one of the leading craft beer joints in the whole of Guatemala, so we would definitely recommend a visit. Head to Casa del Águila Cultural Center, and you’ll find this place on the lower level. The microbrewery sells a wonderful array of delicious, frothy craft beers, artisanal lagers, and even tasty coffee too. This is the perfect place to relax and unwind with friends after a tough day.
La Esquina is the perfect place to come if you want a selection of delicious and affordable food. The desserts here definitely caught our eye, and are certainly something we would recommend to visitors and travelers. But, the real gem of this place is the taco cart they have. You can order all different kinds of tacos, with a mix of weird and wonderful types you’ve probably never heard of before! We would recommend checking out the cochinita pibil taco, simply heaven!
We love everything about this place, from its trendy, contemporary design to the incredible coffee it serves. This is what we wish all cafes were like, and we’ve no doubt you’ll feel the same way. This place is only two years old, and the fresh, clean aesthetic is something that makes it all the more appealing. The best part is that the cafe sources its beans from Guatemala’s world-famous coffee regions, so, if you’re a coffee lover, you’re in for a real treat.
This is one of the most innovative and quirky places on our list, and we love what they’ve done with the menu here too. It takes fresh locally sourced ingredients from the 23 public markets in Guatemala City. This makes for a more authentic, enjoyable, and tasty local menu, and the ideal way for tourists to get the most out of the area. It also results in the menu having some fun and unique choices, such as the calamari and snook tostadas!
Gala is the baby of the list, at only one-year old, but, what it lacks in years to more than makes up for in other areas. It’s one of the most charming hole-in-the-wall restaurants we’ve ever seen. And, the best part is that it’s well-known for its selection of tasty comfort food. You can get things like macaroni and cheese burgers here, as well as gnocchi, and other types of filling, tasty cuisine. It’s one of the top dining spots in the city, and perfect for couple and friends alike.
This is a selection of some of the best restaurants and bars in Guatemala City. They are the choices we feel provide the best level of enjoyment for visitors to the Central American city. You can take advantage of the culture here, as well as some of the incredible local food as well.
