Have you ever had the urge to jump off a ridiculously high platform with nothing but a stretchy rope attached to your ankles? If so, then bungee jumping might be just the thing for you. Potentially considered as a terrifying stunt, bungee jumping most certainly is not for the faint of heart. For those of you ready and willing to attempt the unimaginable, here is a list of the absolute best bungee jumping destinations.
1. Kawarau Bridge, Queenstown, New Zealand
Kawarau Bridge, also known as the birthplace of commercialized bungee jumping thanks to the efforts of AJ Hackett, this bridge offers a 140 ft jump into a wide-open gorge. Although AJ Hackett did not perform the world’s first-ever bungee jump, he did popularise the concept with his first bungee jump off the Kawarau bridge using nothing but a rubber cord attached to his ankles. A company named after the man himself offers jumps off the Kawarau Bridge. Where would be a better place to make your first jump, other than where it all began?
2. Verzasca dam, Ticino, Switzerland
“Bond, James Bond”. The seventeenth installment of the James Bond series depicted the ever so suave Pierce Brosnan as 007 making an ever so dramatic leap off the top of Verzasca dam in what has been considered as one of the best movie stunts in history. For those of you who want to follow in the footsteps of the MI6 agent, this 220m jump can be made by yours truly.
3. Royal Gorge suspension bridge, Colorado, USA
This beauty of a suspension bridge sits at approximately 305m above the Arkansas River. For those of you who aren’t satisfied with just the viewing and appreciation of this fine architectural specimen and walking across this bridge alone doesn’t put the fear of life into you, there is also the option of bungee jumping off of it.
4. Macau Tower, Macau, China
The Macau Tower in China holds the title in the Guinness book of records for the highest bungee jump in the world. That jump would be a whopping 233m. That is 764 feet and 5 inches. We would go on with the mathematical conversion of units but any which way you look at it, it doesn’t get any less. Many of us might prefer jumping into a vast open expanse as opposed to off the side of the building with the potential of making contact with any obstructions. Keeping that in mind, however, measures have been put in place to avoid just that.
5. Volcano bungee, Pucon, Chile
Before we begin, the temperature of the sun is 9000 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of lava ranges from 1000 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The cells of the human body begin to disintegrate at about 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Now you may be asking yourself, “What is the point of all these seemingly irrelevant scientific facts?” Well, these are some nice things to think about when you’re dangling 700 ft above molten rock in the belly of a volcano after having bungee jumped 350 ft out the side of a helicopter. This experience certainly takes bungee jumping to a whole new level. So if after reading this, you haven’t decided to completely abort mission and every fiber of your being is still telling you to make that jump, you now know exactly where the absolute best bungee jumping destinations are.
